Q
My wife and I are taking a caravan trip around Australia and I’m thinking of buying a Savage Model 42 combination gun in .22 WMR and .410 bore to take along for a meat-in-the-pot gun. What do you think of my choice?

A
I wish that Savage had brought back the Model 42 chambered in 20ga magnum. Nevertheless, the Winchester Super-X 76mm .410 shell with 30 grams of No. 6 shot should be equal to most chores on rabbits or feathered game from pigeons to ducks within about 30 metres. The .22 WMR is a good cartridge for taking young goats and pigs out to 100 yards, and in the hands of a cool, careful shot will take a deer. But I prefer to use the full metal jacketed bullets and take head shots.
