Q: I’ve been after a decent Javan rusa trophy for a good many years and the best I’ve managed to bag is 33 inches. Where would you recommend I go to get a record class animal?
Rod Dunbar
A: All of the giant rusa heads I’ve seen came from New Caledonia. That country is home to great numbers of rusa deer and your chances of getting one measuring from 36 to 40 inches there is better than anywhere else. There are a number of outfitters guiding in New Caledonia. It is beautiful country, the climate is pleasant and the hunting reasonably easy. You’ll glass literally thousands of deer. The rut takes place in late July/early August.
