Q: A European pen pal of mine recently told me that he did all his hunting with a Heym SR30 centrefire rifle in 8x68S. While I have a reasonable knowledge of firearms, I have never heard of the Heym SR30. What can you tell me about it?

A: Heym Waffenfabrik GmbH is a small firearms manufacturer specialising in high quality centrefire hunting rifles. Located in the German city of Chamberlain, Heym has been in the gun making business since 1865. Heym firearms are relatively unknown in this country, but their single-shot based on the Ruger No. 1 action and the Mauser Models 2000 and 3000, manufactured from 1971 to 1974 by Heym were sold here. The Heym SR30 bolt-action rifle is a recent 1990’s design with a modern, straight-pull action that uses an innovative locking system consisting of six steel ball bearings on the bolt head. Aimed primarily at the European market, it was made in Luxus, Standard and Classic models in a wide range of calibres ranging from .243 Win. to 8x68S. In addition, Sport and Special models both with synthetic stocks were offered for UIT competition in calibres 6.5x55mm Swedish, .308 Win. and .300 Win. Mag. At present Heym rifles are not being imported into Australia.
