Keith Ferguson has put Australia in close contention for a place in the finals of the men’s skeet, qualifying equal 11th in the first day of shoots, with two rounds still to come.
Both rounds will be run before the finals later today, and Ferguson will need to improve his score by just a single point against his rivals, based on yesterday’s results.
He will begin today’s rounds with 70 points, though 71 would have had him on the same score as another six athletes in equal fifth position.
USA’s Vincent Hancock is on top of skeet for now, though, with 74, and Australia’s other competitor, Clive Barton, appears to be out of contention after a disappointing first round score of 20 kept him back to 67 points, despite a perfect 25 in the third round.
Meanwhile, Romania has taken a gold medal following Alin Moldoveanu’s victory in the men’s 10m air rifle yesterday.
He beat Italian favourite Niccolo Campriani after a nerve-tightening series of qualifying rounds and a tense final.
The pair topped qualifying by equalling the Olympic record of 599 points and then swapped top spots in the final a number of times before Moldoveanu eventually won.
The Romanian’s final shot of 10.3 clinched it, leaving Campriani just 0.6 behind, while Gagan Narang won bronze only 0.4 further back.
With a score of 596 required to make the finals in the air rifle event, Australians William Godward and Dane Sampson didn’t fare so well, scoring 588 and 587 respectively.
