The Greens are helping to spread the word about dove hunting, Federal ammunition, Australian firearms distributor NIOA and Sporting Shooter’s website, all via Twitter and shooting’s favourite fan, David Shoebridge.
We may be stretching the definition of ‘fan’ a little, but Mr Shoebridge has often been hailed as one of the best pubicisists of the shooting sports thanks to his repeated attacks on shooting, guns and hunting.Â
A number of shooting organisations have told us they see a spike in intererst from potential new shooters whenever the NSW Member of the Legislative Council succeeds in generating headlines on the subject, proving that all publicity is good publicity.
Earlier this week, Shoebridge tweeted a link to a video story about a dove hunting expedition in Argentina by NIOA representatives and many of their Australian dealers, hosted by Federal.
“US ammo co. sends Australian top sellers on animal killing spree & just 1 hunter kills 7350 doves in 3 days,” he tweeted, along with the hashtag #gunculture and this link. It was retweeted twice, but we are yet to see any reaction from Shoebridge’s followers.
The video (which we reckon is a ripper) not only follows the dove hunt but demonstrates how the millions of birds are a pest that must be controlled, and also points out that shot doves are eaten by locals.Â
Shoebridge, however, has demonstrated a clear dislike to ‘killing for fun’ as opposed to professional culling. He recently appeared on a program featuring deer cullers and expressed his support for them, but at the same time attacked “amateur” hunters and, by implication, recreational hunting for food or pest control … or fun.
We can only hope his tweet reaches a few potential hunters who’ll be impressed by how much fun the boys from NIOA were having in Argentina, and take that next step in getting a firearm licence of their own.Â
