Scanlan sets new record

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Laetisha Scanlan (Berwick, VIC) has broken her own Australian record in the women’s trap at Australia Cup 3 in Perth.

The 22-year-old rose from her sick bed to post a qualifying score of 74 from 75 to surpass the old mark by one target.

Scanlan continued her excellent shooting in the single barrel final to hit 22 targets and take a 10-target victory.

Catherine Skinner (Manfield, VIC) claimed second place with a combined total of 86, edging out Suzy Balogh (Sydney, NSW) in a shoot-off after the pair had tied after the final.

In the men’s trap Adam Vella (Keilor, VIC) held off a strong challenge from Glenn Kable (Fiji) to win by one target.

Vella shot a score of 120 across the five rounds of qualifying, including a perfect closing round of 25, to take a one-target lead into the final.

Vella and Kable both shot excellent single barrel finals of 23, which was enough to see the 2004 Athens Olympic Games bronze medallist take the title.

Keith Ferguson (Sale, VIC) went within one target of equalling the Australian record in the men’s skeet with a fine performance at the Perth layout.

Ferguson, who is in line to make his debut Olympic appearance later this year, shot 123 from 125 to lead Clive Barton (Tamworth, NSW) by three heading into the final.

Ferguson hit a perfect final of 25 to secure the title by four targets over Barton.
